Introduction to the AI National Park Project
Researchers in Freiburg are at the forefront of a groundbreaking environmental initiative—the AI National Park project. This effort marks the installation of Germany's first AI-driven monitoring system in various national parks and wilderness areas, aiming to optimize ecosystem management and biodiversity protection.
Innovative Monitoring Systems
The project introduces a pioneering AI-driven monitoring system comprising camera traps, audio loggers, and climate loggers. These tools will cover 13 national parks and two wilderness areas, collecting extensive data on wildlife, climate conditions, and human activities. The University of Freiburg's computer centre plays a crucial role in storing and processing this data.
Objectives and Funding
Supported by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety with €1.8 million, the project aims to develop standardized procedures for recording biodiversity and disturbance factors. This initiative will enhance the management of protected areas by providing a reliable inventory of species diversity and actionable recommendations.
Collaborations and Contributions
The University of Freiburg collaborates with biometrio.earth GmbH and Nationale Naturlandschaften e.V., leveraging AI to automatically evaluate data and illustrate relationships between climate, biodiversity, and land use. This collaboration aims to create a tool that provides protected area managers with fast, reliable, and comparable data for better integration of biodiversity and climate protection.
